How the count works
- The count skips two kinds of day: your weekend and the public and bank holidays your country takes off. Which two days are the weekend depends on the country. Most take Saturday and Sunday, though some take a different pair.
- Counting between two dates includes both ends by default. The Include start and Include end switches drop either one, so the same two dates can read a day apart, a common reason two people reach different totals.
- Only the public and bank holidays a country actually takes off lower the count. A commemorative or optional day that is not a day off leaves the total unchanged.
Worked examples
These assume a Saturday–Sunday weekend and no public holiday in the range.
- Monday to Friday of the same week is five business days with both ends included, or four if you drop the start.
- Three business days after that Friday lands on the next Wednesday: the weekend is skipped, and Friday itself is not counted.
Common questions
- What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?
Some countries move the day off to a nearby weekday. The count follows that country's rule and skips the observed date, not always the holiday's own calendar date.
- How are half-day holidays counted?
As full working days. The calculators count whole days, so a date that is only partly a holiday (German banks close from 14:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve) still counts as a working day. Whole-day counting is a known limitation.
- Which countries can I get a business-day count for?
The five with verified holiday data: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Israel. Anywhere else the calculator returns no count rather than a guessed one. See the full coverage inventory
